In 2019, we set aside our structured material and settled into an iterative mode. We decided to perform a live motif based on the movie Godzilla vs. Hedorah.
The monster is an unstoppable, angry, oozing mass that seems nearly impossible to best. The almighty Godzilla, a response triggered by the US's disastrous nuclear tests in the Pacific, most notably Bikini Atoll, struggles to defeat this pollution chugging behemoth. Similar themes bubble up in the animated film Fern Gully. The specter of pollution takes form from heavy industry and lack of empathy, and is beset on consuming the world's resources.
The mood the past decade has begrudgingly pivoted towards climate change. Pangs of defeat and despair linger on people's minds. Our recess consumption has become our worst enemy.
This is where this music came from, and where we pick up on the struggle, the sorrow, and the subliminal fog from the specter of pollution.
Every show played that year was a Hedorah performance. We recorded most of them, of which one was missed, and two had ambient crowd noise issues. These four tracks document Neon Black's 2019.
Early rough versions of our track "Berdlement" can be heard, a byproduct of us regularly meeting to practice before our sets.
